Lodge Overview

Get ready for an authentic safari experience under traditional canvas. Anticipate excellent wildlife viewing and unique safari experiences. Expect the thrill of genuine African ambience in a pristine natural setting. You can find all this and more at Kikoti Tented Lodge.

Kikoti Tented Lodge, otherwise known as Kikoti Safari Camp, is an excellent deluxe lodging choice for you discerning travelers out there who want the intimate experience of a small tented venue. Kikoti's remote location is all part of it's charm, but be aware that getting there on the long bumpy road is all part of the adventure! This tented camp evokes the reminiscent grandeur of the traditional safari camps of the past, when comfort was defined by campfire ambience rather than modern convenience.

Due to the Lodge's unique location on the outside fringe of park's boundary, many activities are offered here that are not available at properties inside the park gate. You may partake in a walking safari, bush dinner, or a cultural tour of a Maasai village. One of the highlights of Kikoti is the opportunity to experience night game drives, where the countryside is illuminated by unearthly light underneath a waxing moon. If you are lucky on one of these night drives, you may see elephants drifting like dark battleships through the surrounding woodlands or the running stripes of zebra flickering in the spotlight.

Night game drives and bush dinners are offered on alternating nights at Kikoti Safari Camp. Accordingly, a two-night stay is recommended, as it would ensure that one experienced both a night game drive and a bush dinner. Walking safaris guided by an armed ranger may be conducted either in the morning or late afternoon upon request. The walks are short but very interesting and route behind the camp and around Kikoti Rock, which is also a sundowner point.

These extra activities combined with traditional game drives will certainly provide for a well-rounded experience. Two nights at 'Kikoti', meaning 'the home of the beginning of life' in Maasai, is an excellent way to conclude any Tanzanian safari.

Each of the large private tents has sewn-in floors and plumbed en suite bathroom facilities, well appointed with classy wash basins, a flushing toilet, and a hot shower. A unique wooden writing desk, safari chairs, and a comfortable bed draped in marvelous gauze furnish the warm canvas interior.

The tents have been raised on platforms of indigenous timber, and each has a charming wooden veranda to facilitate striking views of the green Silale swamp and blue valley below. Watch the sunset's last glimmer cast a rosy blush over the Silale swamp with your favorite beverage in hand. After dinner, gaze up at the violet sky as more stars join the shining celebration. Inhale the tropical earthy aroma of the surrounding woodlands. This is Africa in its purest form.

Kikoti Tented Lodge is a solid choice for those people seeking comfortable accommodations and a range of activities in a small and personalized setting far from the larger tourist lodges. However, for those individuals seeking the ultimate luxury hideaway in Tarangire, the highly regarded and elegant Swala Camp may make a better choice.

Location

Kikoti Safari Camp (altitude of 4,338 feet) is located about 5 miles to the east of Tarangire National Park. Kikoti Camp is located on a 30,000-acre private game concession at the beginning of the Maasai Steppe and home to the Maasai people. The camp is heavily involved in conservation and Maasai community development including anti poaching and construction of schools and medical clinics. A conservation fee for these various development projects is paid to a Maasai trust fund for every client staying at Kikoti Camp.

The advantage of being located outside the park is that various activities are allowed that are not permitted within any of Tanzania's northern National Parks including night game drives and walking safaris. The disadvantage with Kikoti's location is that it is a longer drive to the main game viewing areas inside Tarangire.

Kikoti Camp looks west over the Silale Swamp. The Silale Swamp acts as a giant sponge soaking up water in the green season and then slowly releasing it during the dry season. The Silale Swamp is one of the few sources of permanent water in the Tarangire ecosystem besides the Tarangire River, Gursi Swamp and Lormakau Swamp. Massive concentrations of wildlife migrate to these few water sources during the dry season allowing for spectacular game viewing.

Accommodations

Accommodations at Kikoti Safari Camp consist of 16 tented cottages. There are 10 doubles (1 queen size bed) and 6 twins (2 twin beds). The doubles can be converted to triples to accommodate two adults and one child. The cottages are elevated above the ground and built upon wooden stilts.

Each cottage is enclosed with a traditional and spacious canvas safari tent. There is a large thatched roof over each tent that provides extra shade and protection from the elements. Each cottage is accessed via a short set of stairs, which leads to a beautiful private veranda. The verandas are well appointed with safari chairs, and although the views are only fair throughout the day, they can be quite nice at sunset. At the back of each cottage is an en suite bathroom with a proper flushing toilet, sink and bladder shower. The water for the sink and shower is solar heated and provided with two large tanks just outside the back of each cottage supplying plenty of hot water. The cottages are comfortably furnished with writing desks, a sitting area, cushioned papasan chairs, and comfortable hardwood beds draped in lovely mozzie nets.

The main Lodge at Kikoti Safari Camp is quite cozy and includes the lounge, bar, library, fire pit and dining area. The main Lodge takes the shape of a double rondavel, which is open-sided and creates a wonderfully natural environment. One side of the main Lodge houses the dining room, and the other side contains the bar and lounge area. The bar itself is quite charming with the wooden shapes of various animals carved into its base.

Authentic African décor is situated around the common areas of the Lodge to enhance a charming ambience. There is a marvelous fire pit area in front of the main Lodge that offers an inviting atmosphere in the evening, as guests share safari stories around the dancing flames. Just down the hill from the fire pit is a unique Maasai Boma, which used for bush dinners every other night.

Food & Drink

Breakfast consists of a mixed buffet with orders taken for eggs, omelets, toast, etc. The buffet consists of yogurt, nuts, cereal, breads, fruit and juice. Lunch is served fixed course and not buffet. Breakfast and lunch boxes are available for those wishing to enjoy their meals in the bush and on game drives.

Every other night (i.e. the night when the night drive is not offered), a wonderful bush dinner under the stars is served. Dinner is set up in a Maasai Boma, which is a circular enclosure (kraal) made out of thorny acacia tree that provides protection from wild animals. A dinner buffet is provided and a traditional Maasai dance is performed. On other nights, dinner is offered in the dining room and is served fixed course. Please note that you will be escorted to and from dinner each evening to assure your safety.
