The best feature of KIA Lodge, from the perspective of a weary guest traveling to or from Tanzania, is its convenient location. KIA Lodge is situated less than 5 minutes from the Kilimanjaro airport, an ideal position for fatigued travelers seeking a good night's sleep to springboard the rest of their safari vacation (or on a more somber note to end it.) Accommodations are simple, but clean and comfortable. Each room is located in a round chalet with a thatched roof that is situated amid stone pathways and well-manicured gardens. The views of Kilimanjaro from KIA Lodge are spectacular, especially in the early morning or dusk. KIA Lodge serves as an economical choice for those travelers interested in a comfortable lodge to base the rest of their travels.
The long flights to and from Amsterdam are about 8 and 11 hours, respectively; add in transit or layover time in Amsterdam and this can make for a long journey! If you are arriving into Tanzania late at night, KIA Lodge makes good economical sense for a convenient and comfortable place to rest your weary head before launching into your safari adventures the following day. After hopping off that plane, try to keep your sleepy eyes open for the quick shuttle ride to the lodge, less than 5 minutes away. Upon your arrival at Arusha KIA Lodge, you can quickly begin to recuperate with a fine hot meal and a drink at the bar and begin resting up for your adventure 'in the bush.' Staying near the airport is a much more tolerable option then making the tiring 30-60 minute drive into Arusha late at night.
KIA Lodge is also a convenient point of departure. Being just a few minutes from the airport, KIA Lodge's location allows you to refresh and indulge in one more lodge-style meal al fresco before embarking on that long airplane journey home. One perk worth mentioning is that KIA Lodge provides departure cards to be filled out in the comfort of your room instead of hassling with them at the airport. The staff at KIA Lodge will also check on the status of your flight and confirm your departure time. If the plane is late, then you can conveniently enjoy more time at the lodge before departing to the airport.
The lodge consists of 40 rooms in individual thatched chalets, or round "bungalows." Each chalet is spaced throughout the wonderful acacia tree property on winding stone pathways. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and equipped with air conditioning (although you will unlikely have a need for it.) Each room is pleasantly decorated with Makonde woodcarvings, and is appointed with a small writing desk and charming wicker chairs. You may choose either a double room (equipped with two twin beds) or a larger room (equipped with a third bed for families.)
The main lodge structure and common areas are very nice and consist of an open sided restaurant, an open air terrace bar above the restaurant and a superb swimming pool area on top of a hill. The open air bar offers a spacious and relaxing environment to enjoy a dink after dinner or meet other guests. However, the real highlight of KIA lodge is the swimming pool terrace which is set on top of a hill above the bar. From this area there are amazing 360 degrees panoramic views of the surrounding area including Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru. The views, combined with the well appointed pool, make for a great spot to relax - perhaps on your last day in Tanzania before catching your flight back to civilization.
KIA Lodge is located only a few minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport and is roughly half way between the small cities of Arusha and Moshi. The outskirts of Arusha lie just 30 minutes to the west of the lodge. A few miles to the northeast is Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, and to the northwest is Mount Meru.
Food and Drink
The food at KIA Lodge is very good. Since many of the guests staying at KIA will be arriving on the late night KLM flight, a wonderful buffet dinner is set up just after the plane lands at about 9.30 pm. The staff at KIA Lodge will even delay the cooking and preparation should the plane be late to ensure a superbly fresh meal for weary guests. One special item worth mentioning is the particularly delicious desserts (including cream puffs on some occasions!). It is certainly a pleasure enjoying a delicious meal before you retire for the evening and especially after the marginal airplane dining.
Breakfast is very good, as well. The typical buffet style is offered here, or you may choose to pack a picnic breakfast to go. Lunch is usually a picnic lunch incorporated into your safari on your first day 'in the bush' after departing KIA Lodge.
