Ernest Sitta
Sitta (or “Six” in English) grew up in Sukuma Land, an area
in the Mwanza Region near Lake Victoria. After completing his secondary
school studies in Dar es Salaam, he went on to the College of African
Wildlife at Mweka where he received his certificate in Wildlife Management.
Sitta completed an impressive course work including various wildlife ecology,
management, advanced field skills, identification, biology and tour guiding
classes.
After graduation, Sitta worked as a naturalist in the ecology department
of the Tanzania National Parks. He was assigned to the Serengeti National
Park. During his 14 years in this position, he assisted in the study of
the movement of the wildebeest and zebra migration as well as several
other research projects on the Serengeti Ecosystem. Needless to say, Sitta’s
knowledge of the Serengeti is impressive!
Sitta then left his work with the National Parks to relay his experience
and knowledge to international visitors on safari and began work as a
professional driver-guide. Over the years he has had close calls with
buffalo at Moru Kopjes and close encounters with the wildlife at Uganda’s
Bwindi National Park.
Sitta’s favourite animal is the elephant because of its important
contributions to the ecosystem. Keeping with his interest in ecology,
it is also not a surprise that his favourite bird is the Marabou Stork
because of its vital role as a scavenger. Sitta has extensive knowledge
of all of the National Parks in Tanzania, but due to the many years he
has spent in the Serengeti, it is now where he calls home.
When not at home in the Serengeti, he shares his Arusha home with a wife
and two teenage daughters and enjoys playing football (soccer).
