Paul Shayo
Paul was born in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro in the town of Moshi.
One of six children, he helped his father with the farm as a child. Living
in one of Tanzania’s tourism hubs, he had lots of exposure to the
country’s visitors while he was growing up and decided that he wanted
to be part of the tourism industry.
Paul has over 8 years of experience as a driver guide in Northern Tanzania.
His experience, enthusiasm and passion for animals make him a superb guide.
He loves the Serengeti for its endless game viewing opportunities. Among
the more interesting things he has witnessed was a leopard hunt with an
unusual ending. Paul and his clients had been watching a leopard for some
time when a family of zebra passed nearby. A young foal, not aware of
the danger, wandered from the group and the leopard launched itself from
the tree and tackled the foal. The family of zebras saw what was happening
and immediately attacked the leopard, biting it and kicking it until they
succeeded in forcing the leopard to release the young zebra.
Paul’s favorite animal is the warthog. He feels they have a comical
sense of humour similar to his own. On one occasion, he witnessed a mother
warthog trying to hide her young in a termite mound to escape a lion.
He also loves the Egyptian Vulture. He is impressed by the clever way
it drops rocks on ostrich eggs to break the impenetrable shell. A football
(soccer) fan, he likes to follow the progress of Arsenal and spend time
with his wife and four children when not on safari.
