Pokea Nnko
Pokea is a member of the Wameru tribe and grew up in Arusha. Pokea has
been a driver guides since 1993 and joined Africa Dream Safaris in 2005.
Pokea holds a wildlife certificate from the Arusha Wildlife College. He
also has completed an extensive training program that is offered through
the Tanzania Association of Tour Operators.
His favorite animal to watch is the cheetah. Pokea especially likes to
watch the cheetah hunt, not only because it is so fast, but also because
the cheetah hunts so gracefully and kills so respectfully. Pokea has seen
numerous cheetah chases in the Serengeti and is still just as excited
as the clients when a hunt transpires. His favorite area to see cheetahs
hunting is at the Gol Kopjes on the eastern plains of the Serengeti.
The most amazing wildlife encounter that that Pokea recalls happened in
the Ngorongoro Crater where he found a large pride of lions. The clients
started taking pictures when, all of a sudden, a male lion jumped on his
vehicle’s hood and lay down to sleep. Knowing that lions can sleep
for hours, Pokea was anxious to get the lion to move before it settled
in for a long nap. Pokea turned the vehicle engine on and off, but the
lion would not lift even his head. Pokea had no choice but to start to
drive very slowly with the lion on top of the hood! It took almost a full
5 minutes before the lion finally jumped off the vehicle.
Pokea also recounts a story when he was at one of our mobile camps in
the Serengeti and a pride lions with cubs came into the camp looking for
water. There was water inside several large cans by the dining tent. The
lions immediately bit into the cans to drink the water and then quickly
departed after being quenched.
